Twitter Hilariously Reacts To As7ab Wala A3az “Controversy”

The Arabic adaptation of the hit Italian film Perfect Strangers was released on Netflix this past Thursday and it has since been the buzz on social media. The remake, titled “Ashab Wala A’az”, was adapted by Gabriel Yammine and Wissam Smayra, marking Smayra’s feature film debut.

Netflix’s first Arabic feature features a stellar Pan-Arab cast, including Lebanese award-winning director and actress Nadine Labaki, Egyptian stars Mona Zaki and Eyad Nassar, as well as Lebanese talents Georges Khabbaz, Adel Karam, Diamand Bou Abboud, and Fouad Yammine.

The movie tells the story of a group sitting around a dining table when they decide to play a game in which they all put their phones on the table and share any incoming message, email, or phone call with the group. It isn’t long before secrets are revealed.

Due to references of sex and LGBTQ identities, certain viewers found that the film contradicted “Middle Eastern social norms”. Naturally, not everyone felt this way. The film was largely embraced by hundreds of thousands around the Arab world despite being met with legal action in Egypt. Here are some of the interesting (and funny!) reactions.
