BAU Students Refuse To Register After Tuition Increase

As the financial crisis continues to worsen three years in, the education sector, along many others, continues to suffer several blows with many universities increasing their tuition fees.

Three days prior to the registration period, students of Beirut Arab University (BAU) were informed that the university would be increasing their tuition fees at a rate of 5,000 LL/USD. Students were told they would also be forced to pay part of their tuition in fresh dollars (ranging from around $400 to $600 depending on the major).

This has sparked outrage among students, many of whom were already struggling to make ends meet, and a protest was held yesterday across all campuses against the increase in tuition.

The BAU Students Movement revealed that many students are refusing to register and have decided to drop their registered classes. The responses are as follows across faculties:

Faculty of Medicine: All students will not register.

Faculty of Health: Over 75% of students (in Physiotherapy and Nursing) have not registered.

Faculty of Denistry: Over 60% of students have not registered.

The hashtag #علمي_مش_فرق_عملة has been trending on Twitter as many BAU students are expressing their inability to afford their education due to the university’s recent tuition raise.

Amid these horrific conditions, universities find themselves between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, purchasing fuel and providing electricity for campuses has become insanely expensive, and on the other hand, most of their students cannot afford any increases due to the excruciating crises. As usual, the government is absent.
